I completely let Pike's female first officer slip my mind, you're completely right there. Of course, we end up in a very different situation, with the Enterprise's maiden journey being with a crew consisting of way more cadets; if she had been on, they would have had to kill her off really fast to achieve the conflicts between Kirk and Spock. The former Mrs McCoy's five-second-mention of ick really irked me, though. It was stupid and unnecessary: why a NEW reason to call him Bones? There was a perfectly working one right back in canon, thnxbai. I just managed to repress it, I guess.
